End Riviera’s defiance (Comments)

About a year ago, Rhonda Swan of the Palm Beach Post wrote the following editorial:
Last week, Councilman Cedrick Thomas asked to schedule a discussion on whether to continue hiding public comments during broadcasts of council meetings. In February, the council ordered the city’s cable TV station cameras turned off during the public comment portion of meetings, alleging that political candidates were campaigning for the March election. Since then, public comments have been aired only during reruns. Why are residents who watch the meetings live not entitled to hear the opinions of their neighbors?

They are defying the state attorney, the media and, most important, their constituents. A grand jury needs to show them that they are not above the law.

Riviera Beach extends Waste Management’s garbage-collection contract for at least six months
Waste Management will collect the city’s garbage and recycled materials for at least another six months, the city council decided Wednesday.
The unanimous decision to extend the contract Waste Management has held since 1997 came despite complaints that residents will continue to pay more for garbage collection than they would under bid proposals submitted earlier this year.
Waste Management’s contract expired Sept. 30, but the company has continued to collect garbage in the city.
By all indications, Riviera Beach is now “ground zero for the anti-corruption fight” in Palm Beach County. Luckily for you, MAOS has ring side seats to the action.
