Dear ACLU Supporter,
In a historic vote last week, the House voted to repeal DADT. And the Senate Armed Services Committee voted to include a repeal in this year’s defense authorization bill. Opponents of repeal are expected to try and do everything they can to strip it from the legislation when it reaches the Senate floor. We simply cannot allow that to happen.
With your swift action, we can make sure that the Senate stands for equality and helps put an end to this law, putting behind us an ugly 17-year history.
Since 1994, more than 13,500 qualified and committed service members, both men and women, have been fired under DADT simply on the basis of their sexual orientation. This discrimination has unfairly disrupted people’s lives and cost the United States a very steep price in terms of lost skills, many of which the Pentagon considers “mission critical.”
We are long overdue to end this discriminatory and counterproductive policy, which has undermined our military and done a grave disservice to the millions of men and women who have served with pride and distinction.
We’ve got momentum on our side. We know that—and so do our opponents. Thanks for taking immediate action and helping us take a huge step closer to equality.
